SDG 8 – Prayer Wall

Decent Work and Economic Growth

What does the Bible teach?
Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns. Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they may cry to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin. (Deuteronomy 24:14-15)

What should we pray for?
For wisdom and transparency among leaders and decision makers as they look to improve infrastructure and finances.
For improvements in conditions and the quality of life of all people, to ensure that nobody is left behind, jobs are available for all and all people have opportunities to continue their education and training.
For an end to all forms of abuse in the workplace: exploitation, forced labour and unfair practices. May God work in the lives of the people who carry out the abuse. May those who have been abused find a way out ‐ towards peace and decent work.

What can we do?
Reduce-Reuse-Repair: Preserve resources by buying second-hand more often and having things repaired. Also consider whether you really need something new.
Ethical Shopping: Avoid buying products, including clothes and food, that have been produced using exploitative practices such as forced or badly‐paid labour. Shop ethically where you can. Support companies which hire disadvantaged people.
Supply-Chain-Law: Vote for parties that advocate a strong supply-chain-law and further improvements.
